Physicist Étienne Klein, director of the French Commission for Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy, admitted that the recently published image of what it claimed was Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the Sun, was in fact a photo of a slice of sausage Spanish chorizo.
The scientist tweeted the photo last week which he claimed was taken by the James Webb telescope and praised the "level of detail" provided by the image from space.
"Image of Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to the Sun, located 4.2 light years away. It was taken by the James Webb Space Telescope. This level of detail... A new world is revealed every day," he wrote on July 31 on Twitter, where he has more than 90,000 followers. The post was shared and commented on by thousands of social network users, who took the researcher's claims for granted. A few days later, Étienne Klein wrote, also on Twitter, that the picture is actually a slice of chorizo, photographed against a black background, and that it was all a joke. "Given some of the comments, I feel compelled to state that this tweet, which shows an alleged picture of Proxima Centauri, was a joke.

"We must learn to avoid arguments from positions of authority and the spontaneous eloquence of certain images," the scientist stated. He later issued an apology, saying his intention was "to urge caution with images that seem to speak for themselves."
At the same time, Klein published an image of the Cartwheel galaxy, assuring that, this time, the photo is authentic.
