A wonderful image of a spiral galaxy, listed by NASA as the image of the day. Today, February 21, 2022, NASA listed as the image of the day from space, a wonderful barred spiral galaxy NGC 6217 captured by the Hubble Telescope.

Many such galaxies have bars at their center, even the Milky Way. But in this picture, you can see almost all the major details of the galaxy. And other details can be seen as "dark filamentary dust lanes, young clusters of bright blue stars, red emission nebulas of glowing hydrogen gas, a long bar of stars across the center, and a bright active nucleus that likely houses a supermassive black hole," says NASA.

The galaxy is located 60 million light-years from us and stretches overa length of 30,000 light-years, according to the US space agency. NGC 6217 can be seen in the constellation Ursa Minor.

The image you see above was taken by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys in 2009.
