The first monitoring mission of the Sun will begin soon! Will it warn us of the Sun's violent reactions? See here

ESA has just announced that a new mission will be developed to monitor the Sun and its violent reactions. Also, it was a big debate for its name, to reflect its vital role: "helping to protect the Earth's infrastructure, satellites, inhabitants and space explorers. Unpredictable but violent solar events, such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections," ESA said.

Indeed, the mission will play a vital role in protecting all artificial satellites and various functional artificial objects in Earth orbit. Especially after there have been a lot of incidents regarding the downing of artificial satellites from orbit. One of the incidents happened recently when 40 of the 49 Starlink satellites were hit by a solar storm (more about the mission: ).

There have also been solar storms that have caused power outages in some parts of the world, telecommunications to be shut down, and many other unpleasant things. However, we hope that the new mission of the European Space Agency will warn us before these solar storms, to take action before significant damage occurs.

But before this mission began gradually, there was a huge debate over the name of the mission. You may not believe it, but 5422 works mostly from Europe, but there were also works from all over the world were sent to ESA. After weeks of debating, checking, and reading the works, 3 judges and several experts chose the new name of the mission, which is: ESA Vigil.

Obs.: The first name given by ESA was "Lagrange," but it was wanted to change it to show the vital role of the mission and then this great debate took place.

"We are thrilled with our mission's new name," explains Juha-Pekka Luntama, ESA's Head of Space Weather.

"When I first heard it, I thought it was just spot on. That is exactly what we do, we keep a vigilant watch and guard Earth".

After all, what does this name mean?

The name "vigilis exceptus" in Latin means sentinel or guardian, and "vigil" means vigil and the act of vigilant devotion. Therefore we can deduce that the name represents a devoted mission, which is like a guardian for the Earth.

We hope that the mission will start as soon as possible, in order to inform us of the various violent reactions of the Sun.
